Hello I am a professor and I advised a student,he walked but has not completed graduation requirements and listed that year as receiving his degree on a resume even though he didn't complete it. How big of a problem is this?

As a hiring manager, this is only really a problem if this is a flat out lie. For example, if he walked in June 2016, then took some classes in the summer to finish up, and then officially received his diploma in October 2016, then it's still accurate to say that he graduated in 2016.

However, if he walked, never received his diploma (which would imply he never completed his degree), and still puts down that he graduated, then this is a problem.

Thank you. I told him this, but he didn't seem to understand. I know additional classes were taken, but I don't know if a diploma was finally granted. Will follow up wth him. Appreciate your quick response.

Yeah the key issue is whether a diploma was granted. If so, he's in the clear, but if not, then he needs to be clear that the degree is either a work in progress or was not completed. If it's the latter, it's not a deal breaker but he'll have to explain his reasoning for not finishing.
